In recent security news, Fulton County Prison in Atlanta, Ga. has begun the painstaking task of replacing locks throughout the prison. Locksmiths will be working around the clock to reinforce and upgrade each lock in order to reduce assaults against other inmates and staff.

Recent studies conducted in the prison revealed that the old style deadbolt locks have become easily compromised. Each cell is outfitted with a deadbolt lock which inmates were able to shake free and disengage. Officials hope locksmiths can aid the prison in containing the nearly 2,500 inmates more securely.

So far over 700 of the new lock mechanisms have been installed and the prison has reported a significant reduction in in-house thefts and assaults. The new mechanisms are designed to both securely lock inmates in and alert guards of potential security breaches. These new locks are coupled with an alert device which prevents tampering. When the new-style locks become compromised, an emergency light alerts guards on duty within the cell block as well as the guards in the outside guard tower.

Tax payers will pay approximately 5 million for the new lock mechanisms and installation. Though the price tag may seem steep, both officials and residents aren’t complaining. Recent jail breaks that have garnered recent attentions have left residents of areas around prisons unsettled.
