Flatirons Locksmiths: Be Your Own Superhero–Stop People From Breaking Into Your Home

Home at nightYou know what’s better than catching a thief who broke into your home and ripped you off?

Not letting them break into your home in the first place!

Many victims of break-ins and burglaries find out after the fact that they could have prevented the crime in the first place. That’s disheartening–and doesn’t make Joe Police Officer and Sally Insurance Inspector very happy either.

Of course, the first thing you should look at on your home or other properties is the locks. Some home buyers feel that a lock is a lock. Well, sorry, folks, but cheap locks are easier to pick, bust out, or otherwise compromise than your less wallet-friendly options. Professional thieves may have a variety of tools to work with, and so you want to make sure that your door is pick- and pry-proof as possible. If you’re not sure what lock would be best for your budget range, don’t be too shy to contact us, we’re happy to help.

If you have locks that came with the home when you bought it or inherited it, you also might think about rekeying those lock–you never know who might have a spare key. This is another service we can help you with at Flatirons Locksmiths.

The next thing you should check out in your Burglar-Prevention-Superhero tour of your home is the locks on your windows and sliding doors. Glass doors, especially older ones, can be very easy to pull off the sliders and open. Windows that have seen a few seasons here in Colorado may need some adjustments too, so don’t overlook them. Again, we can help you if you need advice.

After you’re sure that your doors and windows are relatively burglar-proof, you should take a step back–literally. Wait until night time, turn on the lights in your home, and then walk across the street or into a neighbor’s property (letting them know first, of course, or you’re liable to be picked up for a burglar yourself).

Think like a burglar (C’mon, you’ve seen Home Alone!) and try to decide if anything you see through your windows makes your home more of a target for opportunists. If you’ve got an expensive entertainment system, artwork, or anything else in plain sight of your windows, you may think about a bit of redecorating to hide it. Thicker curtains or different blinds may also be good options for you to consider.

Now that your home inspection is complete, think about the things you can do on a daily basis to thwart thieves.

• Lock the doors and windows each and every time you leave home. Just make it a habit, like putting on your coat before stepping into a frigid Colorado winter.

• Make sure ladders, garbage cans, bicycles and other things that burglars could use to climb up to a less secure window or opening are not conveniently placed for their use. If you have a garage, or shed, that’s where those things belong, not leaning up on your house.

• Leave lights on when you go out (or install motion-detector lights to save electricity). Most thieves are looking for easy jobs and won’t come in if they even think someone’s at home.

• Another item we highly recommend in the overall protection of your home is a 24/7 monitored security and fire alarm system. These security systems can be a life saver, literally! They serve a function both when you are home and when you are away from your home and will not only sound the alarm in case of a home invasion but will alert the monitoring company who will dispatch the police if you are unable to respond to their call. These systems will also notify the monitoring company in case of a fire, which can not only save your and your family’s life when you hear that alarm in the middle of the night but can save your home as well, especially if you are not at home at the time the fire breaks out. Just ask us who we recommend for excellent service and results.

Follow these tips, and all you’ll need is your own homemade costume to be a real Crime Prevention Superhero. (We can help with the locks, but all the sewing is up to you, sorry.)
