Flatirons Locksmiths: Choosing the Right Locks for your new Louisville Home
If you’re building a new home, you have probably put a lot of thought into the type of carpeting, cabinets and appliances you’d like to see included. What you may not have thought about is the type of locks your new residence will have. Since your new home is likely to be the biggest investment you’ll ever make, choosing the type of locks you have on it suddenly becomes an important decision.
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) rates locks based upon their dependability and how much security they provide. Grade 1 & 2 locks are heavy-duty locks that come with three-inch reinforced screws and a one-inch bolt. These locks are difficult to manipulate, and are recommended on all entry doors to your house, including those that provide access to your garage.
In addition to a deadbolt lock, a high security strike plate is also recommended on all exterior doors. An ideal strike plate will have screws that are positioned at somewhat of an angle. This prevents the screws from penetrating the same grain of wood, as this can cause it to be weakened so that the door can be split more easily. Security strike plates also have somewhat longer screws, which helps them become more securely anchored.
Deadbolts differ from single latch door handles both in basic functionality and security. Single latches have a handle or a knob on them, and can be made to lock automatically. They also retract automatically whenever the door is closed. These are a great addition to a deadbolt that may not be used all the time so they can provide you with a level of security at all times.
Good quality locks may cost a little more, but they are worth the money spent, since they will also last longer than locks of inferior quality. To find out more about choosing locks for your new dream home contact us today.
